Yesterday I watched a documentary that fully ripped open the bothersome hunch about consumer products that has been circling my conscience for some time. The documentary’s name is “The Plastic Detox”, it is available as of today on Netflix if you want to ruin your perspective on standard consumer goods. As I watched, a growing anxiety came over me, a need for action sprung up but the paralyzing question of where to start and how to sustainably change my habits and items in my household, tempered me. I tend to feel this way a lot, I want to change but it feels too big, so I don’t even start or I start but fall off the “wagon” because the work is a lot! I sat with that feeling and the persistent question I have a lot when it comes to being vigilant about what I put in my family’s bellies and what cleaning supplies enter my home as I read labels and do research here and there. The question of, “If I struggle to stay on top of all of this information and I am a stay at home mother with some time to do this and the financial accessibility to purchase “better, more natural, sometimes organic products”, how can the mother with a fulltime job and maybe one income do this?” This problem isn’t fair and it feels like a losing battle against a system that doesn’t care if its people are sick, or struggling. I often feel defeated. BUT I had a thought this morning, what if an average, run-of-the-mill homemaker like myself started documenting the small changes made in their home and the reasons behind why, and reviews of products, maybe I could help someone who doesn’t have the time for the trial and error to make a decision for their home to be healthier and happier. So here I am. I am NOT a professional scientist, researcher, or chemist. I want to state that up front. This is only to document my own decisions to make my home a better, and healthier environment for my family. It’s as much for me to be able to access what I have done to remember the why and how and for others to have information to make their own changes. My hope is to be able to accumulate a library of actionable items for any household with accessible changes for most. I hope you find it helpful, but if not, I wish you well and dearly hope health and delight for you and yours.
